From the Q&A video, a quick question was “What effect does +1 ranking have on SEO?” Matt’s answer was, “Right now we are still studying it.” He says that Google is very excited about it and expects good things to come from it. A follow up question asked if +1 ratings helped Ads, and the answer was no.

A viewer asked when PageRanks would be updated again. Matt’s answer was that Google runs a script automatically every three months or so, to update the PageRank. In addition to the … automatic script, they have constantly running processes that will lead to human review of sites.

Speaking of PageRanking, Matt discussed the reconsideration request process. He says that this process is becoming more transparent than it has been. Google had originally been concerned that being too open in their reconsideration responses would tip their hat to spammers. Matt recommends requesting manual reconsideration if you think Google penalized your site. He says there is no downside to it, and the manual reconsideration team will now tell you more than simply saying that they had done the reconsideration. Now they will also tell you if they took any action. He says the most common answer, and the best one to get, is that a review occurred and resulted in no change. Matt says that means that they did not find any policy violations and all you have to do is to improve the website’s algorithm score to improve its ranking.

One question was if it was OK to use double 301 redirects on a site. The answer was that anything up to four nested redirects was OK, but more than that would have a bad result.

How to defend against website content thieves was another question. Matt’s suggestion was to be sure that your website pings Google when you post content. Use Google’s FeedBurner or another established ping service to let the world known when you have published content. If you get the word out first, it helps to establish your ownership claim. He also recommended reporting copycat sites as spammers and filing a Digital Millennium Copyright Act complaint.

The answer to “Does Google consider SEO to be spam?” is “No.” Matt explains in this video that Google does not consider white hat SEO to be spam. Matt says that an optimized site improves the user experience by helping users to find what they are looking for quickly and easily. He also pointed out a number of the free webmaster guidelines and tools available from Google, along with their SEO starter guide. As Matt says, “There are many valid ways that people can make the world better with SEO.”

Link farms are penalized by Google

The recent Google Panda algorithm reset the quality ratings for many sites. Google bots crawl websites for information to discover if a site contains high-quality relevant content and ranks it by how much traffic the site receives. Link farms promise thousands of backlinks for one low price, however these links are from thousands of sites unrelated to your site’s content and therefor will not rank well and may even be penalized.

Linking to sites with no relevance

Linking to sites with unrelated content will not help raise your rating. The best way to build good quality backlinks is to find sites on similar topics and content and … request to exchange links with them. Some sites may refuse to exchange links unless your page rank is equal to theirs, if so there are other ways to get your link out there without spending a dime.

Linking to sites with low quality content or spam

Google ranks sites with low-quality content very low, which means if your site is associated with these sites (via your link) your site will receive a low ranking as well. Low-quality sites are sites that contain very little original content, contain a lot of affiliate ads or banners and use Private Rights Label (PLR) content without rewriting. These sites often get penalized for duplicate content because tons of people have bought the same PLR articles.

Banned from search engines

If your site does get penalized for associating with these sites you could find your site banned from Google searches or deleted altogether. If you use a Google hosted site or similar hosting site, you could wake up to find that your site and your content have disappeared. Google has very stiff penalties regarding sites it considers to be “spam”.

What you can do instead:

Use free methods of obtaining legal links from websites and blogs on similar topics. Exchange links with high ranking sites at levels four and above. There are a few sites out there that will allow you to join their site and include your link in your profile and signature for sharing through site communications.

Join a community forum based on your topic and place one link in your signature. Each time you post a thread or reply to another member your link goes in the comment. Just be respectful and only post a few times per day or the site moderator may think you are just there to drop links and ban you.

Write informative, good quality articles and submit them to high-ranking directories. Many of the popular article directories allow authors to place one or two links in the bio box section of the article which links back to your site.

Google began its master plan to promote newer information and more relevant topics in 2010 when they … rolled out their caffeine indexing system. This caffeine system crawls the web searching for hot topics and fresh information. The freshness algorithm takes these recent results and moves them to the top of the list.

This new search algorithm is part of a series of algorithm adjustments that Google has made since February of 2011 when Google announced its Panda update. The Panda update marked a major shift in Google’s search strategy in that it penalized sites that Google views as “content farms.” Content farms are websites that add large amounts of low quality content designed to entice users to visit the pages and click on the ad content. The information on these websites is often not written by experts and may not be factually accurate. In addition, the Panda algorithm took aim at “scrapper sites” which plagiarize other web content to attract users. The Panda algorithm changed web results by 12 percent on average, and all but buried some websites in the search results.

The freshness update, together with the Panda update, benefits news sites and frequently updated sites like corporate sites that advertise products. In contrast, sites with stable or “evergreen” content are moved down the search page because the information is not new. This update marks a major sea change in how search engines rank websites. Instead of searching for the most relevant results, new results have the edge. This makes the Google search page function more like the news feed of a social media site than a traditional search engine because you will see recent information first.

Critics of the recent Google updates argue that users aren’t necessarily looking for “new” information. Some topics, such as information about art or literature, do not necessarily rely on new information. In addition to the criticism about the lack of relevant information, some websites with peer-reviewed sites were downgraded while wiki and user-driven sites remain at the top of the search results. Google states on their official blog that it is refining the results to differentiate between the news-worthy topics and topics that rely less on new information, but some critics argue that Google has not perfected the algorithm yet and that Google needs to work harder to make the results more relevant.

Whether you applaud Google’s efforts to bring you the freshest news or you wish you could return to more relevant results, it seems as if the new search algorithm is here to stay. In the meantime, until your favorite websites adjust to present new content, your best bet is to bookmark the sites rather than count on Google to bring them up in the search results.

I do not see why not go daddy has some special authority with certain search engines and the authority in back linking your prevalent site to others if it wants to. This can only improve your rankings in the search engines of google, yahoo, and Bing. The result is more traffic higher business viability and more value, sounds reasonable right?

Well, one thing I have noticed is that these leverages are only temporary. The leading search engines continue to evolve their influence on specific subjects at a whim. There seems to not actually have any differnance in organizational structure like you would expect. So if they decide to change a 1 to a 0 in there algorithm it just might cost you two months worth of traffic. Ouch, don’t need those sales for the month do you?

The best way to prevent these types of swings is to stay away from SEO companies promoting links and SEO services. Let things happen naturally, use the information you have gained to become an expert on the role of your niche you have specified. Even if it is a function of a niche. Once you have established your position as the authority on the point your links and traffic will come naturally. They will be consistent, but, so will your testimony.

If I live to be one hundred I will never understand the fascination with Facebook. I will admit I have a Facebook account. I started it when my son’s college started posting information available primarily on Facebook. I wouldn’t say that I didn’t go willingly, but I didn’t exactly approach it with a lot of enthusiasm. As a very private person I was never intrigued by the thought of posting my every move for the entire world to see. Speaking of Facebook friends, who are all these people anyway? I have never met, and probably will never meet, some of my Facebook friends. Second cousins twice removed, friends of my husband’s uncle, people I may have known in high school; I have no … idea who these people are, yet I am totally unable to decline their request to be friends. The pressure to accept a friend is unbearable. What does it say about you as a person if you don’t accept friends? It has to be a sign of psychosis and I want no part of it which is why I have friends I know nothing about.

Worse yet, what does It mean when someone “de-friends” you? It’s a horrible feeling. Was it accidental? Do other people know I was dumped? Do they know why I was dumped? Will all my fake friends who I don’t really know dump me?

Another thing I just don’t understand is why some people feel the need to close the generation gap on Facebook. Why my friends, my real life friends, are friends with their children’s Facebook friends baffles me. Why on earth would a middle aged woman want to be Facebook friends with a male college freshman? That’s just creepy. Leave the kids alone and let them grow up without being under constant surveillance!
I also hate the use of Facebook as a weapon. I know a lot of people who post with the intent to harm. Beyond the bullying that goes on, which is way too serious an offense to be mentioned here, people deliberately post pictures and comments just to hurt other people. Pictures of parties people weren’t invited to, boyfriends flirting with random girls and the classic bragging post about yet another new purchase, promotion, or culinary achievement.

Last but not least, what I hate most about Facebook, is Farmville! There is nothing I hate more than getting an email alert to a post, only to find that “Linda bought a pig on Farmville!” Seriously? I don’t care if Linda bought an actual pig to live with in her loft apartment….I just don’t. Nor do I want her to invite me to visit her on Farmville. I’m not coming over. I’m just not.
